The Stand Up! Girls After-School Program is a dynamic and engaging initiative designed to provide students with a supportive and enriching environment beyond regular school hours. Tailored for students in grades 9-12, this program focuses on confidence building, effective, communication skills, sense of humor and resilience, creativity and self-expression, breaking stereotypes, empowerment through laughter, social connection, public speaking skills, coping mechanisms, and life skills development.

3. How does stand up comedy empower teenage girls?

Laughter is a powerful tool for empowerment. Comedy allows girls to share their experiences, perspectives, and challenges in a way that resonates with others, creating a sense of solidarity and empowerment through shared laughter. Stand-up comedy itself involves public speaking, a valuable skill in various aspects of life. Learning to engage and entertain an audience contributes to effective public speaking abilities that can benefit girls academically and professionally.

4. Are those who identify as male allowed to participate in Stand Up! Girls?

Our program is designated for self-identified girls and gender non-conforming youth, ages 13-17.

5. How does the Stand Up! Girls program help to prepare teenagers for college?

Beyond the stage, the skills developed through stand-up comedy, such as quick thinking, adaptability, and the ability to connect with diverse audiences, are transferable to many areas of life. Comedy can serve as a healthy coping mechanism for stress and challenges. Encouraging humor as a way to navigate difficulties can contribute to mental well-being and emotional resilience.

7. Do I have to be funny to take the class?

No – you simply have to enjoy funny things. We will help bring out the funny in you.

8. Is this a lot of work?

It can be very little work, but you may end up liking it enough that you put some work into it.

9. Do I have to want to be a comedian when I grow up?

Absolutely not. This class is a fun way to learn how to express yourself.
